Emotional Level

Kate Fenner - Friday, July 12, 2013

Meet Evie - Warmblood X ASH mare, rising 12 years.

Evie is a delightful little mare. She is beautifully put together and stands just over 15hh. She has come to me for some re-training as she hasn't done anything much for a few years and was very nervous and a little 'cold-backed'.

Her naturally high emotional level means that I need to pay particular attention to this while I am training. I cannot simply lower her emotional level, even though it is always tempting when you are around a 'highly strung' horse to always keep them quiet. In order to learn to control her emotional level I must play with increasing it and decreasing it during training.

Today was my third ride on Evie and she is already learning to relax, which enables me to control her emotional/arousal level.

Evie will be the demonstration horse in two weeks time at the Winter Workshop Weekend in Bundanoon (a full weekend of equine education). The topic is 'Emotional Level in Training'. Come along on Sunday and meet Evie.

For more on emotional level in training have a look at the video on the Free Stuff page.
